| FORD FAIRLANE 427 (1967) CAR HISTORYCar review on FORD FAIRLANE 427Amidst the fierce muscle-car wars, Ford debuted
the Fairlane 427. To fit the big-block engine, they widened the shock
towers and added larger front coil springs to cope. Output was a 'mere'
410 bhp (306 kW) with single carburettor, but on the Fairlane most were
ordered with twin carbs and, therefore, 425 bhp (317 kW). The body and
chassis were monocoque in design and the car could be ordered with a handling
package which consisted of longer leaf springs on the live rear axle,
front disc brakes and larger 15-inch (381 mm) wheels fitted with blackwall
tyres. Only one transmission, Borg-Warner's 'Top Loader' T10, could handle
the engine's torque, so every Fairlane 427 got it. Because the Fairlane
was a thinly disguised race car, it meant potential purchasers were carefully
screened by dealers to make sure that only racers who could handle the
car's power would get to own one.
