| | DODGE CHALLENGER T/A (1970) CAR HISTORYCar review on DODGE CHALLENGER T/ADodge jumped in
headfirst to the SCCA's Trans Am racer series with its aptly named Challenger,
as it was going up against the likes of Ford's Mustang and Chevrolet's
Camaro. It was built for just one year and featured a spec sheet that
would get any gasoline head revved up. The car stuck with a small-block
engine, thus keeping weight down and handling at the optimum, thanks to
better balance. The suspension was uprated torsion bar at the front and
a live axle rear on leaf springs, while discs came standard on the front.
The engine came from the art Swinger and, though advertised at 290 bhp
(216 kW) output, was well over 300 bhp (223 kW). To reinforce the racing
theme a four-speed was fitted, with an auto optional. Also, to aid traction,
bigger rear tyres were fitted than at the front, and this was the first
Detroit muscle car to have such a set-up.
